How to Meditate at your Desk

FYI, guys, I’m not a certified instructor, doctor or any sort of health practitioner. I can’t believe I have to state this, but this is the world we live in. This is what I used to do at my office and still do whenever I feel like my brain is a little too messy.

Meditating is one of the best ways to refresh your body and get back to what you need to do: focusing on your life and career. But, sometimes life (and definitely that career) can get a little stressful. Meditation can help with stress and mental health, two things that often feel the most, well, stressful when at work. It sounds like a no-brainer to add a nice, long and relaxing meditation session to our daily routine.

Sometimes, though, we don’t have time to meditate or stretch or hit a work-out class because that week is a little too busy. But, you can do a quick re-set session at your desk in 30 seconds to a minute! This is less of a meditation session as it is just shutting or slowing your brain down for a minute.

If you’re doing a minute, take 6 deep, calming breaths, if you only have time for a 30-second break, take 3 deep, calming breaths.

Start by sitting up straight and placing your hands on each knee, resting them gently.

Depending on where you sit, you may or may not want to close your eyes.

If you aren’t closing your eyes, focus on an object far away from you. A pillar or wall or plant will do. Brad from accounting will not do. It’ll freak him out, I’m sure of it.

Once you’ve found that object, or you’ve closed your eyes, breathe in, slowly letting the air fill your lungs.

Pause when you’ve hit the capacity of your lungs, then breathe out slowly.

Continue to take deep breaths, breathing in slowly and breathing out slowly, counting to your designated 3 or 6 breaths (or more if you have the time).

Once you’ve hit the amount of breaths you’ve designated yourself, open your eyes gently, or regain focus on what’s in front of you and explore how much better your body and mind is feeling.
