DIY Twine-Wrapped Planters

Rope or twine-wrapped planters and baskets are super cute. I absolutely love the style of woven baskets used as planters, but the price not so much. While I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into woven baskets, my bank account just can’t afford too many of them. This super simple DIY takes less than an hour to finish and brings a little more boho chic into your home.

What you’ll need:

  • twine (different colours, optional)
  • paint (optional)
  • scissors
  • plant pot
  • glue gun
  • extra glue

I made two different kinds of rope planters. One is a simple original twine colour and the other is two-toned for some added cuteness. Below is what I started with.

How to make

Step 1. Clean off the pot of any dust or anything hanging around. You always want to start projects with a clean canvas.

Step 2. Begin by gluing the start of your twine to the bottom of your pot. I left a piece hanging to be cut off after. This way it didn’t lift up as I begun winding.

Step 3. Glue and wrap the twine slowly, making sure you’re lining it up with the bottom of the pot. This part is incredibly annoying and resulted in me burning my fingers on the hot glue a few times. But, be careful! Both for your finger’s safety and for the aesthetic of your updated planter.

Once you’ve wrapped it painstakingly around 3-5 times, you no longer have to glue every inch of it.

Step 4. Add a dot of glue to the ‘back’ of the pot and continue winding the twine around. Make sure you keep the twine tight and that you aren’t letting any gaps set in. Cut off any hanging bits.

Step 5 (optional). Start new twine by repeating Step 2 at the top of the pot. Continue on by gluing and wrapping until the whole top of the pot has been fully wrapped. You can also paint the top or bottom of the pot for some added colour!

These planters take less than an hour to make and update boring plant pots, saving you money as you won’t have to buy baskets or nicer pots for your plants.
