Summertime can be gloriously, wonderfully hot. It can also wreak havoc on your regular skincare regime. Which is why you should have at least two: one for winter and one for summer (and connectors for the fall and spring months when the weather doesn’t know what it’s doing). My skin gets clearer AND breaks out more in the summer, which is beyond annoying. If I’ve spent a lot of time in the sun, the harsh rays dry out any acne on my face, but leaves me feeling parched. Which leads to heavier creams, and then leads to more acne. It’s a vicious cycle. But, I’ve found that a little more thought put into your skincare routine will change this problem.
Foreo
I got this bad boy in a FabFitFun box and I haven’t looked back. It feels really nice if you’ve a little bit of a headache (rubbing it across your sinuses feels amazing) and it makes your skin feel oh-so-smooth. The one I have is in beta testing, but this one is meant for oily-specific skin.
Exfoliate, but not too much
While exfoliating is great for your skin, doing it too much is just going to cause more break-outs (if you can believe it). I tend to exfoliate 2-3 times a week, depending on how often I need it. I like to keep the exfoliating to the evening so my face is primed for any serums I use for some night repair.
Sunscreen Up
You may think that putting more lotion onto your already acne-prone face isn’t going to make it better, but forgetting the sunscreen is a big no-no. Gone are the days of crisco tubs and reflective fans. It’s 2018, which means there’s a sunscreen specifically made for your face out there. My two favourites:
Don’t Forget your Routine
Doing to bed with a full face of make-up isn’t doing your skin any favours. Your pores are clogged up and starting to build up to make a red, rashy pimple. If you’re simply too tired from the one-too-many mojitos and the sun, remove any make-up and at least wash your face.
Scale Back the Make-up
It’s summer. It’s hot. It’s time for some natural looks. Which could mean an hour in front of the mirror making that ‘natural’ look happen, or it could mean a little bit of bb cream, bronzer and mascara. Give your skin a breather by toning down the make-up – it’s probably just going to melt off your face, anyways.
Crank up the Acne Products
Or try a gentle ‘peel’. If you’re using a heavy duty exfoliate or peel make sure to stay out of the sun for a couple of days so you don’t burn your delicate skin. Not into the peel route? Grab some acne products (yes, the ones for teenagers) and use at night before bed to tame any pimples that may pop up.
Ignore the Serums
I have some heavier serums I love using in the winter months after a really good exfoliate. It just screams for heavy socks and soft blankets by the fire. In the summer, though? It’s a Vichy spray and go with a touch of dandelion salve to my eyes.
Michelle is an avid traveler, a great ranter, a lover of all things nature and beautiful. You can find her out of the city limits taking in everything that Earth has to offer. When she’s not dressed down in yoga pants and a t-shirt, you can find her piecing together the perfect outfit to show off in the busy streets with friends – careful to state that she is not a hipster. Her favourite city is Paris, with a yearning for its breathtaking streets, architecture, and fashion so strong that she repeatedly finds herself walking along the cobbled lanes and sitting down in the Tuileries with a cafe au lait, scribbling furiously in a Christian Lacroix notebook.
